I heard on the radio today that Prince Rainier of Monaco died. Apprently his family has ruled Monaco for over seven hundred years! It just got me to thinking what it must be like to grow up as the child of a line of monarchs stretching back that long. When you think about that, you can start to see how it could go to your head, giving you this feeling of entitlement, like the power is your birthright rather than a privelege. Which I suppose by definition that’s what a monarchy is, but I think the better Monarchs throughout history have been the ones that remember their power is, utlimately, conferred by the people.
